
CHALLENGE A COURSE
You may be an experienced sailor and desire certifications for chartering or other purposes. We can offer you the opportunity to challenge one or more of our American Sailing courses.

American Sailing has standards for each course offered and those standards must be met for certification. You must show you posses the knowledge and skills in any one particular course to be awarded certification in that course without actually taking the formal course. Certifications from other sailing training systems are not transferable.

You may challenge ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing, ASA103 Basic Coastal Cruising, and ASA104 Bareboat Cruising.

Steps to challenge a course:
1. Choose the course you wish to challenge and review the ASA sailing standards for that course.
2. If you are confident you qualify to move forward based on the sailing standards, register to challenge the course. You will be required to submit your sailing resume at registration. Sample resume'.
3. Upon review and approval of your resume, you must complete and pass the ASA required certification test as well as pass an on the water skills test.
Each Challenge will take approximately four hours and the cost is $360 per course.

CHALLENGE ASA 101 (Basic Keelboat Sailing)
ASA 101 Overview:
Upon completing the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing course, you’ll be equipped to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat ranging from 20 to 27 feet in length, confidently navigating in daylight and in light to moderate conditions, with winds up to 15 knots. You’ll master the essentials of sailing—everything from basic terminology and sail trim to helm commands, seamanship, and the all-important rules of navigation to keep you clear of hazards. The course covers the fundamentals of safe sailing, with auxiliary power operation as an added bonus. It’s your ticket to a lifetime on the water.

3. Upon review and approval of your resume, you must complete and pass the ASA required certification test as well as demonstrate the required on the water sailing skills.

We understand everyone may need some fine tuning and instruction. You may need a Private Lesson to hone your skills to meet the skill requirements. If we determine you need to take the whole course, we will credit 25% of your Challenge fee toward the full course. Our goal is to produce knowledgeable and skilled sailors.​​

CHALLENGE ASA 103 (Basic Coastal Cruising)
ASA 103 Overview:
Able to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered (inboard or outboard engine) keelboat of approximately 25 to 35 feet in length by day in moderate winds (up to 20 knots) and sea conditions. Knowledge of cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety, and seamanship.

CHALLENGE ASA 104 (Bareboat Cruising)
ASA 104 Overview:
Able to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary-powered keelboat of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. Knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple-anchor mooring, docking, health & safety, emergency operations, weather interpretation, and dinghy/tender operation.
